Leadership in Context with Keith Tucci
Episode 215 SHOW NOTES
2 Timothy 1:13
Retain the standard of sound words which you have heard from me, in the faith and love which are in Christ Jesus.
People walk out what they really believe. When we see people do things, what they are doing is manifesting what they really believe. We walk out not what we have said “amen” to, but what we believe deep down. Paul is challenging Timothy to walk out and be sure of what he really believes.
The foundation of leadership is understanding that your convictions are 24/7. If we don’t live our convictions, just speaking them has little effect or purpose. Often people discount the impact they are making because they aren’t someone who gets up in front of people and speaks. The way you impact people is with the model of your life.
Timothy was there beside Paul when he heard Paul explaining the faith, defending the faith, preaching the faith, and demonstrating the faith. That is what Paul wanted Timothy to retain. Paul said these things with faith and love, not trying to win an argument. He was trying to draw people to Christ. You can’t draw people to Christ when you hide the Truth from them or slap them upside the head with Truth.
2 Timothy 1:14
Guard, through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us, the treasure which has been entrusted to you.
“Guard” means to build a fortress. The enemy is going to come after you because you have a treasure of salvation in you. You have to guard that. God has put something wonderful in you.
2 Timothy 1:15
You are aware of the fact that all who are in Asia turned away from me, among whom are Phygelus and Hermogenes.
Paul is teaching Timothy how to carry on in the faith and minister to disciples. Yet he mentions those who have turned against him. Paul did not let the sin of the few distract him from the need of the many.
Guard and retain “the things which you heard from me in the presence of many witnesses.” And what do you do with those things? You “entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.” (2 Timothy 2:2)
There is a treasure in you. Guard that treasure, and let the Lord work in you both to will and to do His good pleasure. And there are people around you with a treasure in them. Help them see that treasure, and encourage them to guard it and use it for the glory of God. You might be the only one drawing that out of them. Let’s go show and tell what the Lord has done and is doing in and through our lives.
